IT Sligo students will play a significant part in this year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade in Sligo.
Students studying tourism and event management, marketing, web development and creative media, creative design and fine art are all contributing to the event using skills they’re acquiring through their programme of study. Visiting international students will also take part.
This partnership will provide much needed practical experience for the soon to be graduates, while the St. Patrick’s Day committee will also benefit from having the expertise and enthusiasm of the skilled students.
Visitors to Sligo for the event will see flags designed by students studying the BA in Creative Design, representing iconic figures in Sligo mythology.
You can keep up to date with the latest news on the parade by liking the Facebook page set up and managed by the students, called St. Patrick’s Day Sligo 2013 or by following on Twitter @SligoStPatrick.
Leading the collaboration at IT Sligo is the Head of Department of Marketing, Tourism and Sport, Ann Higgins, whose late father Tommy, a Freeman of the Borough and former Mayor, was a founding member of the Parade in the 1970’s. The St. Patrick’s Day parade in Sligo has been running for over 40 years and the students and committee are hoping to attract more colourful floats and create a carnival atmosphere for everyone this year. The theme for this year’s parade is The Gathering, a Fáilte Ireland initiative for those with Irish history to come ‘home’ to Ireland in 2013.
